Introducing Manchester Chiropractor Dr. John Merrick
My first encounter with chiropractic was purely out of desperation. I was in competitive judo in the New York/New Jersey area and had sustained a severe injury to a disc in my neck as well as a compression fracture to my mid-thoracic spine. The level of competition at this time in my career was high and suddenly the "quest for gold" had abruptly come to an end.
In the meantime, however, I was not only unable to compete or practice judo but I was facing the possibility of not being able to work as it appeared the only answer to my problem was either surgery or surgery according to the “experts.” In a frantic search for relief and the ability to return to exercise and optimal performance at work I went to see a chiropractor and the rest is history.
At the time I entered chiropractic school, I was already in the business of physical therapy and rehabilitation having worked at the Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine (Rusk Institute) in New York and, later, at the Meadowlands Medical Center as a chief physical therapist in New Jersey. I was in the process of applying to medical school with the help of a medical colleagues at the hospital when I sustained the injury to my neck.
After going through two weeks of physical therapy and ultimately facing the prospect of surgery I went to a chiropractor and sustained almost immediate relief. It was then that I made the decision to attend Chiropractic College and not medical school. To me, this neck injury was an omen.
